The National Alliance to End Youth Homelessness roughly estimates that 550,000 unaccompanied youth up to age 24 experience homelessness for longer than one week in any given year. Experts believe the number is far higher yet there has never been a comprehensive national study to accurately determine the number of runaway and homeless youth in America.
The letter, available for download above, led by Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), is circulating in the Senate in support of $2.664 billion for HUD’s McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grants, as well as $20.854 billion for HUD’s Section 8 Tenant-Based Rental Assistance program, in fiscal year (FY) 2017. The letter was sent to the leaders of the HUD Appropriations Subcommittee.
